Frank R. Paul (American, 1884-1963) Final Enemy, Super Science Stories magazine interior, September 1950 Ink on board 14-1/2 x 10-1/4 inches (36.8 x 26.0 cm) (image) Signed lower right This is a great piece that shows a space traveler being chased by a hoard of the locals while a classic Frank R. Paul spherical spaceship is in the back. This piece has it all, including being associated with L. Ron Hubbard. This is the second-to-last science fiction story that L. Ron Hubbard published before shifting his focus to Dianetics and the Church of Scientology. Dianetics was launched in Astounding's May 1950 issue and on May 9, 1950 L. Ron Hubbard's companion book Dianetics: The Modern Science of Mental Health is published. In 1952, L. Ron Hubbard founded the Church of Scientology. As noted above, the story is published in September 1950, so Hubbard was working on Dianetics and developing the Church when this story and art is published.
